Hi,

As from past 3 months I'm trying hard to get ranked on keyphrases like <red widget placename>, <red widgeting placename> etc.....at last after lots of hardwork, backlinks and many other on page and off page optimization i'd come on top 20 for kps <red widgeting placename>.

But when first I discovered that ranking it was on 14th Position the 2nd day it was on 16th Position and on third day it was on 19 position and it is still on that position but i'm afraid as it will be going down and may be it will come on third page or fourth page which I don't want.

So anybody here please help me what should i do to maintain my site and its ranking and bring it in top 10.

Thanks in advance.

Hyder_Ali - Congratulations on achieving some initial success.

In the short term, you're going to see your site bouncing all over the place. If you read other current discussions on the forum (the current serp changes thread [webmasterworld.com], for example), you'll see that Google has recently been making almost constant adjustments to rankings. You need to take a long term strategy.

In the long term, the advice you received to an earlier question about your site is the best...

How to be top 10 for a very competitive keyphrase?
[webmasterworld.com...]

It boils down to creating top quality content, promoting it to attract high quality inbound links, and making sure your site can be crawled and indexed.

You might also want to adjust your targeting, to rank for many phrases that aren't quite so competitive, rather than for one that is extremely difficult to rank on. Ultimately, the combined traffic of many less competitive phrases will help you rank on the competitive phrases too.

I discovered that ranking it was on 14th Position the 2nd day it was on 16th Position and on third day it was on 19 position...

There's usually a honeymoon period with Google, where for a month or two or three... depending on the type of site and the type of links... you will get higher rankings than normal, so you have some visibility and have a chance of attracting natural backlinks. After that time, your site will begin to drop unless the links you've gotten are of sufficiently high quality.

So it may be, eg, that you've perhaps gotten blog links, which over time will go off the first page of a blog and lose their effect... or simply links that don't have enough quality to move you up.

It can take years to build rankings for highly competitive phrases. Depending on the type of site you have, 3 months is not a very long time at all. But you need to build a body of content, and a body of high quality inbound links.

I suggest reading this classic WebmasterWorld post, which is cited in the Hot Topics area that's pinned to the top of the Google Search forum home page....
