Often I come across outdated information which persistently sticks to the top (like first five) positions.
Knowing that time plays a great role in having sites and pages rank better (more links, trust, etc.), this would be in line what I see.

But, if I search for something that went through multiple changes over the last three or four years, why bother about having articles from '05, '06, or '07 in first positions while accurate information sits somewhere below.

Please note that in cases that I'm basing my problem on, the material is out there big time, as the stuff is more than popular.

One would expect engines like Google to start "archiving" pages that have outdated content.

Thanks

I can see that it's a challenge for Google to know what kind of search results are improved with fresher results and what kind of results are improved with more well established content. Part of Google's address to the challenge has been the "QDF" or "Query Deserves Freshness" factor that they place internally for some queries - often searches that show a current buzz factor of some kind.

Another address they've made is the new Search Options [webmasterworld.com] - something I've already used a good bit when I get frustrated by outdated information in the SERPs.
