Google's 'Recent Pages' option is missing many of our updated urls

We have many pages cached by Google and many pages recently cached but if we search for recent pages in the index we only return 90 pages whiched have been recently updated. How does Google determine the age of a page or its content?

We also note that page images shown alongside the search result are out of date yet the cache of the poage is up to date.
Any help appreciated

I've been playing around with the "recent pages" option for a bit and it can be confusing to see specific patterns. It is important to realize that the sequence of choices you make will sort of "build up" unless you use the "reset options" link. So if you choose "past week" somewhere along the line, that particular filter will stay active until you choose another time based option or do a total reset.

For the site: operator searches that I was testing, it seem like the date is fixed by the first time that the current version of the page was cached - and that can be different than the most recent cache date.

As far as images - well, what can I say, Image Search is a very strange critter. Many of the threads here about Image Search mysteries seem to end up with a digital shrug that just says "who knows?"

Thanks for the response,
The following results are from an "inurl search" of my site.
If I reset options between each search I get

Recent pages 963
last 24 hours zero
last week zero
last year 90

How is the date identified by Google as most of the pages have been updated over the last year and many have been cached last week?
