Um, Google, hello ?

You go to check webmastertools, find some files not found errors, check the reffering urls, that happen to be a google groups thread created by some sob #*$! who giggles away like a schoolgirl after posting a link to a non existant page on your site with some made up string, far from an innocent typo.

No profile for the user that posted it so Google allows anonymous post by blackhat, crawls it, finds broken links, leaves the post, year after year.
Not the first time, cant just be me.
So, as far as i understand it, this should have no impact on my site, as it has been said, there is little a competitor can do to harm your rankings.
But I am not sure about that and I wonder if Google drops its own PR because of all these broken links from Groups.

Tried to report bogus profile and malicious post, will not accept the form,
says page not available.
So, can't contact Google to remove post and profile, it is permanent crud in Google and some sob is giggling as my revenues fall.
I obviously have a stalker, as there has been numerous instances of different interfernces over the last few years.
If the sob responsible ever reads, this know that my 84 year old mother is also affected as she depends on some of my revenues so if i ever identify you, expect no mercy and in the meantime, consider getting a life.

Grab the bogus URL, and redirect it to a valid page -- Home page, category page, site search page, etc.

Then you can giggle back.

But 404s from links that are not on your own site are nothing to worry about. Google knows that people make mistakes when linking and that few link 'maliciously,' and they know that it would be foolish to count the mistakes of others against your site.

The only 404s in the GWT reports that you need to worry about are the ones that originate from errors on your own site; These may be expected to affect G's view of the 'quality' of your site if they are numerous.
