Newer Content Pages Having Problems Ranking

I’ve been wondering how I can optimize new content pages to outrank existing pages. Let me show an example.

Example.com/widgets

Example.com/red-widgets

For a number of years the first url has ranked well for both “widget” and “red widget” searches. However red widgets is hardly optimized (one or two mentions on the page and not in the title) Now that I’ve created a page that covers red widgets in more detail that page cannot rank. Is it just a matter in obtaining more incoming links so I get an indented dual listing to the newer page?

I’m happy with the ranking. However looking at logs it’s obvious many visitors leave the site because they haven’t found what they’re looking for. Yes I’ve tried related page links, breadcrumbs etc, but many don’t see the links.

I'd say the main thing will be to get good PR for the new page. External backlinks would make a big difference. Also ensure a solid internal link structure that includes links to the new page from other related page on your site.
