I have a 2 part question:
(background new site owned 5 months/ live 2 months/ competitive keyword)
#1 - Each time i make it to Google page 1 for my secondary keywords, Google throws me back anywhere between 2-10 pages back in the serp.
#2 - Today i posted about a fresh news article and used original content (my own words) and now my main keyword is like on page 50 or 60 (previous it was at page 15) & my latest secondary keywords that were on page 1 are now on page 3.
Is this normal or abnormal? I am trying to understand what is going on. I have no advertising, nothing, good content, 500+ unique visitors a day. I don't know why Google is doing this.
Please help me understand - Thank you in advance.

Two months and you are showing up for a competitive keyword - even if intermittently? Well done. There's another current discussion you may appreciate: How long would you give a new site to rank? [webmasterworld.com]
I'd say what you're seeing sounds relatively normal - even a bit better than normal. One factor that might play in is whether Google has your keyword flagged as "Query Deserves Freshness" - if there's a lot of current news or discussion around the topic, the rankings can be more volatile as Google tries to keep the first page looking "fresh".
