Can someone explain how Google updates to me?

I'm trying to get my head around the Google update here. From what I understand Google updates daily, (small updates) and then updates on a large scale like once every couple of months (also called the Google Dance?). Is this right? Is there anything I'm missing?

Thanks for your time.

Forget the "Google Dance" part. That idea and terminology is left over from several years ago.

Let's go to a Google source on this: Matt Cutts article: Explaining algorithm updates and data refreshes [mattcutts.com]

haha, that's pretty funny.

So, but ted, how about backlink updates and what not? I have heard that pagerank updates (at least the ones you can see) are followed by larger changes than what is seen on a day to day basis (maybe not technically considered a "dance" anymore, but maybe close to it). Would this be true? or is it all being continously updated daily/hourly?

Thanks,

High profile websites get updates very often. The more trust you have the more often they update. Some websites can be updated many times a day. Some websites get a full crawl once a month others get it once every 2 or 3.

Backlink updates and PR Updates are changes in reporting only. Your rankings will factor in those areas continually as they indexed, and that is long before they show up in backlinks or toolbar PR information.
