Lost Rankings For Major Keywords - Negative SEO immunity starts when?

I woke up today to some pretty nasty drops on rankings on one of our "test" sites. We've added maybe 400 links in the last few months, lots of comments and posts via social media type sites. Rankings were pretty good as a result of the "marketing" and the site is a few years old now so it should have some trust. We linked to the index page and internal pages and varied link anchor and link numbers but to be honest it does not look that natural. Looking at today's results we are between -40 and -100 in the rankings for most of our key terms and it's although early days yet I suspect we have a penalty related to the link building. My point is this, if I can shoot myself in the foot like this then I'm pretty sure I can direct this energy towards my least favourite competitor and earn them a nice holiday from the front page. At what point does a site become immune from negative SEO do you think?

Are your tail terms effected yet or is it just those major key terms generated only from the IBL's ?

It looks like the major terms are the ones that have dropped many pages. Right now I can't see any traffic at all coming into the site but given we are 4 pages deep at the very best I'm not surprised. If I type in the domain name I get the top two results so we have not been banned, just pushed down. Any ideas on how long this might remain in force, it's never happened to us before.

I've just noticed that when I run a site: command Google returns my index page https: with a place holder message. The rest of the site / pages are fine. After a few more searches today I've also noticed we still rank for some obscure two and 3 word combinations so I starting to think it might be a glitch?
