In Google webmaster tools, has anyone tryed the new tool for pointing to the prefered domain. For example, it ask you if you want your links that point to example.com and count those links toward www.example.com.

If so, has it helped your rankings, stayed the same, or hurt them?

The Preferred Domain setting is usually a means of preventing canonicalization problems that can damage rankings. If your site happens to have a canonicalization problem at the time you make a selection, you might see some improvement in your rankings after a while. But most sites won't see any change at all.
