60% of traffic from Google. What should I be aiming for?

In the beginning, I made a website. And I looked upon that website and thought it was good ...

After a whole year of working I've managed to get others to see that it is good also! Now I get 25% of free daily traffic coming from sources OTHER than search engines (people bookmarking, being mentioned in articles, links on quality directories, etc.).

But out of the 75% of free search engine traffic, 60% is Google traffic.

Is there a good rule of "self-sufficiency" that gives average Search Engine/Google reliance of large commercial players? Obviously with a commercial site I wouldn't expect my self reliance percentage to equal that of, say, WebmasterWorld - but a target would be nice to be able to tell myself "you're doing well"!

Thanks
Mike

From the stats that I see, you are doing average, and maybe just a bit better. Keep on going and developing other traffic source as best you can. Here's a well-aged post from 2002 that still has some good advice. It may give you some more ideas: [webmasterworld.com...]

It's a rare niche today that would be truly self-sufficient without Google traffic - that's why webmasters scrutinize every move Google makes and keep their tin-foil hats well polished.
