I have redesigned my full site , all links have re-writed from dynamic urls to static url so i want to ask u should i use 301 redirect for dynamic urls or remove that dynamic urls full directory using google wmt.

Dynamic urls have generated duplicate content, duplicate links.

my site have original 11,000 original pages but due to dynamic links more than 30,000 urls are indexed in google.

I have blocked some of dynamic urls using robots.txt file but as they no in thousans google dont removed its content and content and urls are still there for those urls which are blocked by robots.

Now i want to know should i completey remove that dyanmic urls directory.

Or

I redirect all those to new static urls, if yes should i remove that robots rule which i explained above,

Thanks

There's a very good discussion about this in the Hot Topics area [webmasterworld.com], which is always pinned to the top of this forum's index page. See: [webmasterworld.com...]

You need to consider all the factors and make your own decision, based on your site and its history.

I would redirect the dynamic URLs for all orderings of parameters over to the static format, forcing the canonical domain at the same time for those. This also gets discussed (almost) every week in the Apache forum here.

Well the problem is after rewriting urls we have deleted some old content which is generating too many 404 errors.

or showing pages with errors on it

I want to remove old directory using google wmt but my other team members are saying it will destroy all ranking of the site , and yes no dynamic url is ranked in google only they are visible when opertors are typed

and how much time will take 301 to drop old dyanmic urls if i dont use google url removal tool.

It is irrelevant how long it takes for Google to drop redirected URLs - because while they still show in the SERPs your redirect will deliver the visitor to the correct content on your site. That's good for your visitors.

Set up the redirect. Verify the correct operation, and then forget it. The redirect is a permanent fix. Let Google fix it, at their own pace. Don't waste any more time on it beyond adding the redirect and verifying the correct operation.

Thanks for ur reply but i want to know that after rewriting urls we have removed some outdated content bcoz of which my google wmt is full of errors so should i have to worry for that ?

WMT lists URLs that return error codes so that you can check that those are all genuine errors. That is, check the list of URLs for any unexpected entries. Beyond that, let Google drop them at their own pace.

Here's some bleeding edge help many aren't familiar with which is to use Google's new canonical tag (adopted by all major SEs now) to make sure all the SE's know which page is the right page.

I have 32K URLs blocked by robots.txt, no penalty that I can see.

I worked with a site that had a couple of million duplicate URLs blocked by robots.txt set against a few tens of thousands of valid URLs that were open to indexing - and which actually were indexed and ranking.

If those pages now 404 are still indexed, your penalty will be when surfers run away after hitting a 404 page.

The best strategy is to redirect the surfer to the most logical place with similar content, not let them sit on a 404, even redirect them to the home page if nothing else.

If you want to keep your visitor you'll redirect to the most appropriate new page OR to the homepage if there is no new page... Otherwise they leave and that's the last you see of them.
