301 Domain Redirect - how long should it stay?

Hello Everybody,

I have a query on 301 redirect.

I have done a 301 redirect from site A to new site B.

1. How long does it take to transfer all equity / PR etc earned by site A to site B?
2. Can I let the domain A expire once all PR juice / equity is transferred ? Assume someone buys the expired domain A and creates a new website, will it again get all the equity that I had earned.
3. Suppose, someone buys the domain A and creates a website, will site B loose all its value since now the 301 has vanished?

Thanks.

If the 301 redirect is gone then all the value that it was transferring is "disconnected". The "transfer" is not a once and done event. It's more like an electrical circuit or a water main that is continually flowing, unless you break it.

Thanks for your reply tedster.

So I guess I have to keep the Site A Live with the 301 intact.

My emphasis...
I guess I have to keep the Site A Live with the 301 intact.

Actually, once your DNS has propagated, you don't have to keep Site A alive... and in fact, Site A should have vanished.

You just need to keep domain A alive. You can address the DNS A-records for both domain A and domain B to one .htaccess on Site B's IP, and use that .htaccess both to 301 redirect domain A to domain B and to administer domain B.

No need to use two web hosting accounts, but you will want to own domain A as long as there are any references to it on the web.
