Unexplained ranking drop in Google, but not other SEs.

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone can shed some light as to why the website I am working with, has experienced big drops in the SERPs for Google.

It was ranking high for a number of long tail keywords and suddenly dropped 20-30 places for some. It's Yahoo ranking has actually improved during this time.

Traffic has gone from 100 unique hits a day down to 20 or so and it's more or less killed activity on the site.

I have checked the inbound links Yahoo Site Explorer and nothing has changed.

The only changes that have been made are a couple of directory submissions (legit/high PR and used by competitors whose rankings are unaffected).

The site has experienced some fluctuations where it has dropped out of the Google SERPs entirely, but it comes back after 2 days or so.

The number of pages indexed peaked at 14000 but it has steadily declined and is now down to 9000. Could it be a filter to do with the pages on site?

If anyone help to shed some light as on the root cause of this problem or how I can go about finding it, I would much appreciate it.

Hello Awashi, and welcome to the forums.

The Google algorithm has become complex and there are MANY possibilities. Have you gone through the discussions in the Hot Topics area [webmasterworld.com], which is always pinned to the top of this forum's index page?
