I am wondering if it is better to give Google as much information about our sites or to give Google as little information as possible?
I used (and partially) still have the opinion that the less Google knows about my sites, the better it is for me. My main idea is that I want the links between my sites to count in the ranking algorithm instead of being depressed.
Basically, I don't want google to know that Site A linking to Site B is actually 2 sites owned by the same person.
I remember in the old days, there was talk that google doesn't like it when yor site are hosted on the same server and downgrades the linking value between the 2 of them.
To follow this logic, I am not actively using Google Webmaster Tools, I am not using G Analytics and I never use G-toolbar on FF anymore.
But is this privacy still needed, and could I actually be getting penalized because I don't use these tools to improve my sites?
My main argument for believing that this privacy is now useless is that Google now knows EVERYTHING (well, almost) on the web.
So, is my privacy a good idea or a bad one?
In my view, if you are doing nothing that breaks Google's guidelines, then it's best to treat them as a partner; you are helping them compile an accurate and useful index, they are helping your site to be found by the very people you want to find it.
If you have something to hide, all bets are off! ;)
