Google traffic to older pages - better, newer pages available

OK - so I am (very) grateful that Google sends us traffic. They don't have to do that. We don't take this traffic for granted.

So I am looking through the logs and see that traffic is being sent to pages on topics that are a bit old (say 2006). We have newer pages on these topics that I'd prefer people see over the older pages. It is not that these pages are irrelevant, but we do have more up-to-date info on the topic.

I could attack the problem with a sledgehammer and 301 these pages but I am not inclined to do this (mostly out of fear of being seen as trying to mess with their algo).

I am thinking of adding a "Related pages" box - should this go at the top of the page or the bottom of the article?

Is there a better way that I can signal to google that we think we have 'better/ more relevant' pages on a particular topic?

Thanks for your time.

Cheers

You need a stronger backlink profile for the newer pages.

Certainly you can go some way to help the new pages rank by linking from the well-ranked old pages. You will get less benefit from a "related links" box than you would from inline linking from the body of the text. You might want to do both.
