Changing from <font> Tags to CSS When Rankings Are Improving

If a page on a website is moving up in the rankings, and it currently uses <font> tags, would it be a good idea to change to CSS or do you think that would hurt your rankings?

Theoretically that shouldn't make a difference as markup is not content. The few elder pages I've gone back and updated to CSS did seem to get a slight boost, but I can't say that making that change was the reason.
