background info:
site is little bit over a year old. ranks well for long tail terms. started working on, and tracking some high compitition terms. main term returns 54,000,000 results. tracked ranking for the term looks like this:
12/27/08- 212
12/31/08- 220
1/3/09- 214
1/6/09- 213
1/11/09- 235
1/13/08- 148

would you be nervous about an 87 possition swing in G serps even though it was moving up?

Not at all nervous, and I would only feel mildly positive about it, too. That deep in the SERPs all kinds of things happen.

You have way TOO MUCH time on your hands. Most of us are worried about positions 1-20 and you're over here watching positions 100-250, yikes!

54,000,000 results? Don't expect much more movement unless you performed some real magic recently and the increase in positioning is due to that. But still, that is page 14/15 of the results, who goes back there besides you? ;)

After 8 years online, I've watched the results ebb and flow thru lots of dial turning at G. However, things always go back to the way they were placement wise over that time. So a small dip in rankings (or even totally MIA for a day, just means (to me) that somebody changed a setting, and they are weeding out the garbage. So normally I just wait it out for a day or two and things just work out again....

I'm sure age of site has a lot to do with it, but if you're doing all the right things, normally the site will rise back to (or better) than it's normal placement.

I knew I had that comming! I'm not obssesing over a page 15 ranking, just watching a specific keyword.

My worry is that if the ranking jumped up too much maybe I over did it on the seo and should be concerned.

Hmmm, if I overdid it and jumped up that many positions and had twice that more to go, I'd overdo it two more times for good measure and see if I could peg pageoneresults. ;)
