Over the last year I have seen an increase of about 100,000 unique visitors per month in traffic. However, google trends shows that I have less effective unique traffic.

So, what is google trends actually reporting for yourdomian.com?

They're reporting on searches made just for the domain name, I assume. In other words, searches for a domain name are navigational searches, and how that search volume is trending is what we see in the report. It's not a traffic report like Alexa or Compete might give. It's just a search volume thing, by query term.
