Google not removing indexed pages after 301 redirect

my ecommerce site was redesigned and categories and sub categories were created with static urls.

since old url structure was not seo friendly .... all the old urls were re directed to new home pages. (not one to one redirect )

but still google has not removed old urls from its index

can any one guide me ..... iam new to seo

Hello kumar5050, and welcome to the forums.

Make sure that your redirects actually return a 301 http status (not 302) and then don't worry about the Webmaster Tools reports. Google's reports will sort it out slowly, but their ranking algo will take the redirect into account quite a bit faster than Webmaster Tools and other "reporting only" functions will reflect.

As I just said in another thread here [webmasterworld.com...] it will take at least three months for the old URLs to drop out of the SERPs.

While they remain, and where they still rank, they are a useful source of additional traffic.
