When trying to check my indexed pages in Google using site: command the homepage is listed on the 9th page which should eventually be the first URL listed on the first page.

Is this a serious problem or something that can be neglected.
If serious why is this happening?

If I where you I'll be probably really worried. What happens when you use the info:example.com command?

I am very much worried about the situation. That is why I had posted this for the panel of experts on Webmasterworld.

Using info:www.example.com displays my homepage.

Is your home page served from the domain root itself, http://www.example.com/ -- or is it served on a more complex url?

You might also check for canonicalization problems. Try site:example.com - that is, your domain name without the "www." prefix. If you see URLs in the results with and without the "www." you need to set a Preferred Domain in the Google Webmaster Tools console and also set up a 301 redirect for all requests using the 'bad' version of your domain pointing back to the 'good' version. There's lots of advice on this topic online if this is the problem and you need more help fixing it.

I don't see the root index.html listed #1 in many cases with a site command (healthy sites) so this is normal.

A url that includes "index.html" is different from the domain root itself. Some websites configure the server so that no content is returned directly when the domain root is requested. Instead they first send a redirect, and I have seen that kind of thing tie up the site: operator results.
