How Google Ranks Its Own Home Page

I found this interesting:

When googling the word "search", google.com is the 11th result (top of page 2).

When googling "search engine", google.com is the 21st result (with quotes) and the 22nd result (without quotes).

Anyone have any thoughts on why they'd do that?

Looks like they need more backlinks. Oh and some good anchor text too! :o

That's the trouble when everyone says "Google it" I guess. Branding run amok!

I've always liked some of these searches. Pretty suggestive.
