I didn't know they ever went away? From Google's point of view it's still content - even if just links to other, potentially more substantial content. They don't usually rank, although they can often be retrieved.

On Apache you can turn off the indexes option, and those directory listings will result in a 403 access denied error. Or alternatively, create an index document for the folder.
