For a certain keyword I am seeing midly different results depending on whether I capitalize the first letter or not. What is google's point here and how do you optimize your website for it?

I've noticed this before. I just did an experiment. Opened a new browser and searched for mortgage (lowercase). Got the results, screen printed and saved to a Word doc. Then in the same browser I next searched for Mortgage (uppercase). I got very different results (#1 moved to #2, #2 & 3 (indent) moved to #4 & 5 positions, etc. Then I pressed search again (for Mortgage - uppercase). This time I got the exact same results as I did with the first search for mortgage - lowercase.

It's almost like if Google sees you search for mortgage then Mortgage two times in a row, they show you different results (thinking you changed the case and searched again in hopes of getting something slightly different).

So I tried something else. I opened a browser and searched for mortgage. They gave me results. Closed the browser and opened a new one. Then I searched for Mortgage (uppercase). This time it gave me the exact same results as when searching for mortgage (lowercase) in another browser. I was able to reproduce this behavior several times.

I also tried searching for mortgage, then garbage cans, and then Mortgage. In this case because I did a search for a different term between mortgage and Mortgage, it showed the exact same results for mortgage and Mortgage (similar to searching in two browsers - one for mortgage and the other for Mortgage).

The moral of the story appears to be...

If you submit two searches in a row for the same keyword - one uppercase and the other lowercase - in the same browser, Google shows you something different. In all other cases (where uppercase in one browser and lower case in another OR where you search for a different term between searching for uppercase and lowercase) you seem to get the same results.

But who knows... :)

There is some thinking that where capitalisation makes a difference to the meaning of the word Google will show different results. If I could think of an example I would give one, but it was a very late night last night and my brain isn't functioning at that level today.
