I have roughly a 180 page website, which has existed for about 3 years. All of the pages are indexed in Google, except THE HOMEPAGE! There is no problem on any other SE like Yahoo etc.

The problem started only about 2 weeks ago and the homepage has dropped off for some of its main keywords completely. Does anybody know what the cause of this may be?

Thanks

Is it missing completely, or just listing poorly? Check by searching for [a unique string of text]

Then check your incoming links - normally, the majority would be to the home page.

Then check your code; is there something that might upset Google?

BTW, I am assuming your home page has real content, not just images and flash?

But when all's said and done, inside pages are often richer and more focussed than the home page, which, by it's nature, is broad and has less 'solid' content.

So long as you have good navigation, unique <title> and meta description, I'd not worry too much - it's overall referrals that matter.

This is related to the update Google did on Halloween. Check your webmaster tools account. If you had Sitelinks before, they should be gone from showing in your account too. This is a "test" or a "bug" by Google. Most sites are back, but some are still affected as yours is.

Best thing to do is to submit a reinclusion request through WMC and also in the Webmaster Forums in Google.

Thanks for that - I'd missed that.

hhhhm, in response to Quadrilles comments:

1. the homepage was missing completely.

2. the code is completely fine and always had been

3. yes the homepage has real content on it with very little images

I believe the problem was actually an affiliate who had the same domain name as me but with a - in the middle. He used a frame to direct traffic to my site but his site showed in the browser. The site also took my top listing in Google and my site was nowhere to be seen.

I have sinced had his site removed from Google altogether and my sites listing has returned. HOWEVER I now have a page rank of zero! It says N/A!

That's normal; visible page rank is several months out of date; Google knows :)

Page rank is very rarely worth worrying about.
