I appear in the top 5 for a vaery competeive keyword in google.co.uk pages from the uk, but i flicker in the results for the 'the web', is it a positive sign, could i expect that this could be a more permanent fixture for my site in the serps anytime soon?

It does sound like a positive sign, but as you know, getting well ranked in "from the web" is more competive and challenging. The "flicker" is interesting. Is it sometimes completely gone, or just sometimes very low.

Which browser are you using? Each one will give a different result for Google.co.uk (The Web) results.

Try using a US proxy server like meagproxy (for free) and see how the SERPs look.

Bear in mind if you are UK-based and UK-hosted with mostly UK-backlinks then it will be much harder to rank in the "real US" Google.com SERPs.

Also bear in mind that each Google.gTLD (The Web) results may also display different results.

In my experience only very well-established, long-term sites rank well in the various .gTLD (The Web) results and, believe this or not, even though I am UK-based and UK-hosted for 15 years, one or two of my .com sites do not rank at #1 in Google.co.uk (The Web) even though in most other .gTLD results they are #1 all the way through!

Heres the thing. Right now i am in the listing in both 'the web' and 'pages from uk', i can bet later i will be in the pages from uk but not 'the web' and while longer i appear in 'the web' results but not 'pages from the uk'.
Very strange goings on, it almost fits in with my stats, my hits are so consistant its silly, i can almost tell you exactly how many im going to get even to the point that in the last 3 days it has been exactly the same yet 1 day had 1 hit more, no real peeks or troughs, and this is according to g analytics. My hits to mention are under 4 figures just i case someone may think i'm talking 10 or 15 hits a day
I have noticed that on certain days when things start slowly i appear for this trafic search term for few hours to bump things up and then dissapear for 'the web' searches as this genurally better than 'pages form uk'
Is google working that hard?
