Here's another question - did you check all the way through the search results pages? It's important to understand whether your url disappeared completely or if it is still in the results but just at a very low position.
As Ted said above:
- what could have changed recently, pages, text, tags, links, etc.
this will effect your rankings
Came back to find all my page 1 terms have bombed out of sight.
Unable to find them even including my domain in the search.
Have checked my webmaster tools and no messages.
I have a number of blog sites that write about my site and have read that Google might not count these links so highly now.
Would be interested to hear others opinions on this.
Cheers
Dave
I always see a drop as the serps are rearranged. So you're doing some things right and follow tedster's advice in the first response.
I also notice that sites that tend to get updated more often (like blogs) tend to hold onto those short bursts in rankings for a while longer, and eventually permanently occupy those spots barring any penalties.
Good luck and Welcome to WebmasterWorld.com!
As I have not made any changes for some time I have been looking elsewhere for anything that could have effected rankings.
Yesterday I was looking through Google webmaster tools and found 350+ links from a website I did not recognise, turns out this guy has copied some links in our footer and place it exactly in his footer!
I have a few questions.
These links are showing in the tools from very late July through to currently, I lost most of my traffic 21st Aug could this have been the cause?
Why would he have done this?
I have sent an email to the owner asking for the removal of the code, is there anything else I can do?
Any finally, if he does remove it and if it was the cause will I need to inform google to get any penalty lifted?
Thanks for any help
Dave
these days Google is continually updating
And thus, going from number 4 to number 8 should no longer be considered surprising or even an indication that something is necessarily "wrong" -- it's just the way it is, as tedster said.
But going from number 1 to number 900 -- well, that may spell T-R-O-U-B-L-E (to quote Tanya Tucker!). If that's the case, use Webmaster World's search function to look over the vast archive of posts on the same subject, as you'll get a goldmine of good information to help you get back on track...

This normally means you have done something wrong otherwise called "OOPS" for some and others didn’t know the rules.
as far as the message quoted above "Yes" it looks as Google is reviewing sites faster than ever, sometimes as fast as 30 Min to 1 Hour when the Google bots find the new content.
Personally I think you should focus more on "what next?" Thinking of make the experience more of what they expect out of your company.
Make a quality site you are not ashamed to show your mom. (or you need to get the trucks out)
