Sponsored Results in Image Search - and Sitelinks at position

Today, we noticed two odd changes on Google:
  • Sponsored results show up in the image search. So far, Target.com has been the only merchant participating.
  • Sitelinks showing up in the middle of the results page. We have a site that shows up at position 4, but it includes sitelinks. (Sitelinks are usually reserved for the position one site.)

This is the first time I've seen either of these.

Also, G seems to show different results for different computers—even more usual.

Is anyone else seeing this? Have these items been there the whole time, and I just missed them?

We had a thread about Google's intention to advertise on Image Search results back in May:

Google VP Marissa Mayer has been commenting about the advertising opportunity that Image Search seems to present, but also mentions that they want to test and move deliberately with it. I assume this is one of those gradual steps - thanks for the report.

Sitelinks in position #4 is a strange one. I've seen Sitelinks show up on page 4 for a url that was #1 but got penalized. That only lasted a day or so - apparently a coordination issue between various parts of the SERP creation process.

I wonder if seeing Sitelinks in position #4 (a universal search slot on many SERPs) is intentional or accidental. I guess time will tell.

Different results on different computers has been going on for quite a while. Sometimes it's a different browser, or logged-in versus not logged in, or possibly even a cookie related test. It can be quite disconcerting when you run into it with two computers side-by-side!
