Putting two related sites in the same WMT account

I have 2 related domains, say one about widgets, and one about red widgets.

Should I put both sites under the same account in Google Webmaster Tools? Is there some kind of penalty for 2 related sites? I wasn't going to link them to each other, but they are on the same server.

I've done it with no problems - even with some sites that openly interlink.

I have all mine in one account too, and they interlink somewhat.

Me too, and I can't see any problems.

Not a problem - it may even send a signal of "trust" to Google through this disclosure of association.
