One big page performs better than paginated pages

I've noticed my big pages are performing much better in the Google serps than those paginated into two or three smaller pages, so I want to combine those paginated ones into the first page only. Is the best way to deal with this with 301's from pages two and three?

If you definitely want to get rid of the pagination, then a 301 redirect is definitely the way to do it.
