Google Local Search - how to rank?

Hi there, does anybody know how to be shown and rank at the entries in the local business center (lbc)? Some time ago, it seems that the distance between the town-center and your address was significant.

But now the results seems totaly confused: We are in a small town, only 2 small companys offering a service, both listet on lbc, but positions > 40, while other companies 3 towns and about 25 km away are listet in the Top10 of the lbc. The results seem to change very often, so I'm not able to see a scheme.

Shouldn't people be directed to the results laying nearby? I mean, it's a local search ;-)

Any ideas about that?

cangoou - This thread, from about 6 months back, discusses various considerations and approaches...

How To Get My Business To Show Up As A Map In Google SERPs
[webmasterworld.com...]

As noted in the thread, the Google Local algo has been evolving over the past several years. The algo seems to vary by business type. Distance from the center of the zip code is one of several factors, and it's not always "fair" or necessarily relevant. To some extent, Google appears to be moving away from a pure radius listing, more so for some business types than for others, but they haven't been entirely successful.

Local user reviews are another factor that Google considers.

Consistency of data across the web becomes a consideration if, say, you try to fudge your address data to list yourself close to the city center. I'd strongly recommend reading the entire thread.

Additionally, for everybody's reference, here's a link to the Google Local Business Center [maps.google.com].

Thanks a lot! Sorry, I didn't find the thread you mentioned with the search.

One of the things that thread didn't touch upon is how to broaden the range of phrases you appear for on Local. This currently seems to depend very much on business name, much as directory rankings often do. It would be helpful to add this dimension to the discussion.

Any thoughts?
