Treatment of old but not maintained domains

Hi

I have two 5 year old domains but the domains have never been maintained (eg content updated, no link building etc...). Now both domains are at the bottom of the search for any keywords on google....

I have updated the content and started getting some links but no change at all on google search results. is it better to buy new domains or keeping updating the content and getting more links?

Thanks

David

Anyone got any experience of this, because I am in the same position.

Cheers,

I have updated the content and started getting some links...

How much time are you giving these links to kick in? While you can see some boost from a new link in a few days to a week, in some cases the full power of a link appears to take up to six months or more to build.

It's hard to isolate just a single link, of course, and particularly hard to separate it from other algo factors... but in tests I've run, the full effects take a while. It's a slow process and requires some patience. The links, of course, also need to be good ones.

I would keep the old domans, update the content on them, and try to get some quality links pointing to them on other domains. All things being equal, Google gives more credibility to domains that have been around for awhile.
I wouldn't make the changes all at once, but rather start updating in sections. Also, I'm assuming that you're going to keep the same subject area that the domains had all along.
The links, of course, also need to be good ones.

Yes, absolutely - don't use link farms or unrelated directories. Try to get links on good sites that have related subject matter

Also, if you haven't already, set up the google webmaster console and upload an updated sitemap, etc. You can check index stats. Also, check the cache dates on the pages that have your new links. At least you can tell if they have been indexed and get some measure of any changes that have resulted from linkbuilding.
