How important is content at top of source code?

In continuing to build out this site, it seems our length of code has grown enormous, IMHO.

So, does Google only index or crawl only a certain number of lines, character count, file size, or everything? I have some files that don't really get to the content until about 250+ lines. Is that too far down the page?

To get a snap shot how google views your page do the following.

1. Paste your url in google search minus the http://
2. Click the cached link
3. Look for the "Click here for the cached text only" and click the "cached text" link.

Now think about how much of the top content is duplicated accross the entire site and how google reacts to this [ tries to figure out what the page is about ].

After this, consider the amount redundant javascript code in the top of each page that could be called as a separate file, reducing user load time and googlebot resources.

Basically make pages easier to understand and parse, and chances are they will understand them better and include more of them.

I've tried pasting the www version and the non-www version and it takes me directly to my site.

- go to google.com first
- then enter www.example.com (replacing example with your domain) in the search box
- then click the "Cache" link under your site listing for the home page
- then click the "cached text" link
- it should only go directly to your site if you clicked the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button

consider this, google ranks by links. Google doesnt like footer links. The higher up the page the links the more weight i believe it gets. So what do you want first, important links or content?

phranque, I'm never "Feeling Lucky".
You know, it only does that "automatic site destination thing" when I'm using IE.
When I use FF, then what yourself and Minnapple suggested works.
