Using several keywords in page names

Please excuse me but I am a novice when it comes to termology and SEO.

I have a site that has had over 3 millions hits in the last 2 years but mainly through luck. The site in question has most sub pages saved with keywords which I understand is not the best thing and will probably come to a head very soon and drift down the rankings

Anyway I am designing a new website and I was wondering what people advise when it came to naming pages? if I do use keywords or /phrase with more than 1 word do i use a _ or - to break the phrase up?

Apologies in advance as it will probably seem a daft question to the experts on here.

It's not a daft question at all - it was debated for a long, long time in the SEO community, but now we understand that dashes have a very slight edge over underscores.

Here's one of those discussions:

More recently, Google made some changes to help out the underscore a bit. But since you're building out a new website, use the dash. If you're dealing with an established site, don't bother with a change. Creating all new urls is too big a problem and will often undermine that very slight advantage with a pile of new headaches.

All good advice from Tedster.
I'd just add this - be sure not to overdo it when you use keywords, at the risk of looking like a spammer.
So, it's ok to use
whatever.com/red-widgets.htm
but avoid
