I have run one website for the past 5 years and recently decided to start a new one.

From previous experience, I assumed it would takes months to get indexed etc and would need to submit the site to Google, get links and so on.

However, I purchased the domain, added a couple of pages and without doing anything else, the site is fully indexed and being crawled much more regularly that my current site of 5 years!

How can this be? My current site has 1000s of links, has PR, is well established whereas this new site has about 6 pages, hardly any content, no links, no PR and I didn't even submit it to Google?

Try the Yahoo site explorer to check for back links, someone is probably linking to your site. I have no idea why, but lots of junk/spam sites link to sites as soon as they are created.

That happened to me. The site was just up for 2 weeks, and frankly, I didn't want it indexed yet, but then I started seeing referrals from Google in my stas. No one had linked to it at that point, that I knew of.

I didn't want it indexed yet

Thats a very good point, put it up and chances are its going to get indexed whether you want to or not. If you put it up make sure you redirect the www to the non, or vice versa if thats your choice, put up a proper "coming soon" page, and try and get a real good link to it first befor all the junk comes.

You wouldn't think "first impressions" would mean much with a search engine, but we have found they do.

Do you have the Google Toolbar installed? It phones home constantly.

Several possibilities are described in this discussion...

Why is Google indexing my entire web server?

If your website is generating a feed, it will ping many servers and spammers will steal your content and often give you a link. G will simply take from there.
