Geo targetting - google.com and .co.uk show major differences

I have one .co.uk site which has been relegated to 3rd page for their company name on google.com although it is 4th on google.co.uk. Another .net site is 1st on Google.com but nowhere on google.co.uk.

Is this type of geotargetting general - or is it just me ! How long has this been going on for ?

It's been going on for quite a while and has been growing in intensity over the past year or so. There's a section about geotargetting in the Hot Topics area [webmasterworld.com], which is always pinned to the top of this forum's index page.
