Adding a minisite on keyword domain, and linking

Apologies if this has been covered already (which I'm sure it has), but I didn't spot it in the FAQ. I have a client who has a domain that doesn't really match his business it's to do with his initials. I can get a domain that would closely match the primary search term for his industry, but he's already got his 1st domain name in all his print advertising. If we run his site on his main domain, and set up a second mini site on the keyword domain, with linking - is there a legitimate and useful way to do this that won't upset Google, and add value from an SEO point of view? I wouldn't want to do it for lots of domains, and I don't mind if the keyword domain has a tonne of content on it - but I want to do it right...

I wouldn't think of the keyword domain as a "minisite" - or else it will not gain enough substance in content and backlinks to actually rank for the keyword. And if it by some chance it eventually does rank. it will look just like a feeder domain and be penalized.

This approach holds the germ of a decent idea, but the keyword domain needs to offer real value for the visitor all on its own, if you don't want to risk losing the main domain some time in the future - give it a real business purpose and some juicy content.
