Will redirecting too many domain names to a sigle site hurt rankings? Do any of the engines dislike this? How many is too many?

I've never heard of any issues with this. Just 301 redirect the domains you aren't using to your main domain name. And only promote one.

I know of one case where a portfolio of 1300 domains all 301 redirect to the same core domain. No problems.

To expand on what agerhart said, the owner does not continue to build backlinks or promote for those 1300 domains. Most of them are for typosquatting and trademark protection. Maybe 20 are from acquiring other businesses, and those domains redirect to a specific page welcoming former customers to the new home.

Thanks for the info. We have several quality domain names that we do not use and would be useful to redirect mostly for direct loads (as these have never been used) and typosquatting. Most are already redirected, but I will consider redirecting others that we have too.
