Links pages

I have an established site which has a 3 links pages (separated into different categories). Having read a lot of articles, it seems reciprocal linking isn't the "in thing" to do.

I am now thinking of combining all 3 pages into 1 and then moving some of the links to article pages on my site which relate specifically to that subject - thus, removing the number of links on my links page...if that makes sense?

Is this a good idea? Are there any other strategies?
