we have been working on a site since 1.5 years and it was indexed and was ranking very good over the google with its choosen keywords. Site was beating fair enough competition and inner pages were also doing good at the same time. Since 3 week site google hit the site and most of the top positions say 10th or 15th went to 125 or 100.

at the same time home page also not gettting the good positions same as earlier.

We are regularly adding content, no duplicate at all, links are coming regularly, article submissions and dir submissions regularly with different anchor text, same as with article pages like we are targetting inner pages as well properly. but still i dont see much improvement out there.

what cud be the reason for this penalty. is it something happening to everybody or this is just me strugling here.

It wud be great pleasure to have your comments...

thanks

That does sound like a penalty. Common problems that can cause that kind of drop in rankings are often related to your backlink profile -- too many of one "type" of link, such as all from sites related to one owner or group of owners, or almost all from free directories, or all purchased links, and so on. Google especially looks for a healthy number of independently given links. If Google feels there is evidence of trying to manipulate their rankings, they will counteract it.

There are other possible problems to think about in examining your site - not enough unique content, etc, etc. There are some threads that might help your analysis in our Hot Topics area [webmasterworld.com], which is always pinned to the top of this forum's index page.

Thanks for the reply. This happen not for google but Yahoo msn as well, in my site case. Yahoo & msn rankings also went down by 1/3rd. Similar links might be a case but as far as the free directories are concern, we normally submit to all fine and google indexed directories. We dont go for paid linking but max 2-3 good quality link each 4 month.

Cud you pls guide us on this issue. we are also adding quality sections and value to the existing pages..

thanks for the help..
