How do I tell if a new domain name is banned by Google?

I bought a new domain name, put up a great site with a lot of work, negotiated some good links to it - but nothing, it isn't even listed by G three months later. I've now discovered that it was registered some years ago, used as a spam site and then deleted. I suspect it was banned whilst the spammer had it.

I've put in a reinclusion request but the printed blurb tells me that it may take a considerable time for this to happen, if it happens at all. I'm planning some new sites, does anyone know if there is any way of checking if the domain names I'm interested in are banned by G or not? Wouldn't a ban expire with a deletion?

You made the right moves. Many bans do not automatically expire with a Whois change, and as far as I know Google offers no way for the public to check. Those cards get held very close to the chest!

Just of out curiosity, how did you find out the domain name had been used several years ago for spam? I'm thinking the Way Back Machine [archive.org...] would be a good thing to check before registering a domain name.

Thanks Tedster, I'm sure you're right. Easycall, yes I looked it up in the Archive and that will be my first call in future before I buy another one. Just about every .com domain name that is worth having has already been used by someone so anyone registering one now is highly likely to get one that has been previously deleted. I looked through a list of deleted domains yesterday and most of them had been spammy in the past.
