The Google link: operator only returns a sample of any links that point to a page. Thr sample changes over time, but it is never complete. In the Hot Topics area [webmasterworld.com], which is always pinned to the top of this forum's index page, the following thnread sums it up:

The link: Operator - it's not like other search engines! [webmasterworld.com]

For this reasn many webmasters do not bother checking backlinks with Google. Much more common is to use a different search engine such as Yahoo! Site Explorer, where the results returned are much closer to complete.

Even within that sample of backlinks that Google does give, there is not currently any way I can find to remove the internal backlinks (note that SiteExplorer does offer this option.) Every "comination" command I try on Google currently gives me no results - not even those external backlinks that I can see on the regular link: results.

You can see more external backlinks from within a Google Webmaster Tools account - that works a bit better, but it's only for domains that you can verify. So that fuller information is only available to a site owner, and it's still not complete and it still may contain internal links.
