In my experience i have been able to rank websites on msn in less than 1 month, yahoo in about 3 months and google in about 7 months..

Last week i built a brand new website focused on a 3 word phrase with very little competition.. and as of today the site is ranked #14 on google for this keyword. I have done absolutely no link building yet, all i have done is write optimized content and picked a good domain name.

I have a couple quick questions..

1. Do i run the risk of sending my domain into the sandox if i start aggressively exchanging links or will i get kicked into the sandbox regardless?

2. In terms of link building, how many links would you suggest i get for this site given that it is already showing in google?

I think you answered your own question

"3 word phrase with very little competition"

Don't go mad with building links, take it easy to begin with and gradually build them up. If there is very little competition, you may only need a few good, well placed to do the trick for you.

from my experience any website I create will show up on top 10 results in google within a week but rest assured that after a few weeks google will stop ranking the new site.

I've seen this kind of thing happen so often that I gave it my own name - "honeymoon" rankings. It actually IS a sign of getting the "sandbox" treatment that new sites can usually expect. As asinah suggested above, in most cases those rankings will fall away soon enough (a week or two) and you'll need to build trust, see backlink growth, and so on in order to compete "for real".

I've seen this happen time and time again, which is why I learned the ever-valuable lesson of NEVER rushing to tell a client the great news about where they are in the SERPs right after launching.

Don't be surprised if two weeks from now you vanish, and pop back up on page two within six months. I personally would only score a few links a week, you won't get much besides your own sites until the PR value goes up anyway.
