Disappearing and reappearing for key searches - Penalty or index flux?

Within the last 3 - 6 months I've noticed that my domain is completely disappearing from the index on a small number of higher profile keyphrases in my industry. On these terms that I used to be in the first 30 on, I go back as far as search results allow me and can't find my pages, so it looks like a dissappearnce rather than a -30 or -950 style penalty. I occassionally pop back in for days at a time, and there are several other high ranking, similarly high profile keyphrases that the same URL is showing up for, including fairly related searches (ie no show on "widget delivery" but still there for "widget delivery next day") Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is a penalty or if there is something I can do to help my page return on these terms more permanently?

Have you been tracking which Google IP addresses are involved? This sounds like it might involve different datacenters, except for the fact that it's gone on for so long. That would not be a normal "flux" at all.

Complete disappearance would also be a very intense penalty - so I tend to think it's a bug. Do you hae a Webmaster Tools account? If so, any clues in those reports?
