Redirecting domain names.

Is directing all domains to one server a good idea?

I've got a few domain names hosted by separately from my website - and have a couple of options..

1. Let the domains point to an old server and from there apache will give a 301 and send to new server

2. point all the domains to the new server and let apache give a 301

I can't think of any reasons why google would prefer either option or equally penalise either option.

From a logistical point of view, just using one server would be cheapest - does anyone use extra servers though?

Thanks!

I prefer to use a registrar who will issue the 301 redirect - so I guess that's the equivalent of using a second server. My concern is using the same IP address for all the 301 redirected domain names. That practice exposes too much competitive information for my liking, especially in markets where active Google sabotage from the competition is a real concern. When the registrar hosts the domain level 301, then the entire portfolio of domain names is not exposed so easily.

Thanks Ted - it makes sense to keep as much info as private as possible!

Yes, I suggest, as did Tedster, to use 301 from the registrar. Do NOT do like text-link-ads did as they got their site booted because it now also comes up as textlinkads and is NOT 301'd. They screwed up on that one. PS, I did too once, a long time ago...learned my lesson from that one, LOL.
