This has got to be more than just "Honeymoon Effect"

I see it, now I don't...I see it, now I don't..........What?!

Story in short (as possible!)

Started out with a new website on freeserver but bought domain name and used redirection service to forward traffic from domain name to freeserver site. Rankings HIGH on Google--usually # 1 for every keyword I had hoped for. Then I bought space and shut down the freeserver so there wouldn't be any forwarding (and unwanted advertising). Google dropped me, then picked me back up to HIGH ranking again (first page). Then nothing, then top ranked again---you get the picture! This has been going off and on again for several weeks. Every time I seem to get the boot I CAN find my site by searching for site:www.example.com - but that's the ONLY way.

I did read about the Honeymoon effect but the way I read it there isn't such a yo-yo with being ranked high and then nothing.

Ideas?

I have seen this kind of yo-yo with new domains - especially when Google moves their results back and forth between datacenters. (Install the ShowIP add-on to FireFox to see changes in the IP address that is serving your google.com results.)

The good news is that after several weeks, you are still getting some high rankings, even though they're sometimes on and sometimes off. The tough news is that your domain is still new - several weeks is a mere newborn in Google terms. It takes a while, usually many months, for rankings to stabilize.

Another thing to thnk about is that your inner pages on the freeserver may not have the same urls as the proper server, so they are now potentially orhaned or non-existent, leaving google with some things to figure out for a while.

Ted's thoughts are they most likely though. You site being new, it will not be established to the same level on all the datacenters.
