Every day i check my serps not knowing what to expect! I admit it's frustrating but some people could do well with taking a chill pill - especially dc watchers (I admit - I dabble)!
Isnt this part of makes seo fun and dare I say it, a specialist area? The more Google changes it - the more specialist it becomes - which makes our jobs much safer!
Is Google really taking the fun out of it for you? (All MFA site builders need not reply to this post - I know the answer!):)
It's not about SEO anymore, it's about building a strong website with respected content that is well linked from all corners of the topical web. In my opinion, the SEO fads are peanuts compared to the long-term value of a well connected and well respected site.
Is there more to your website than the homepage?

Or maybe not, if clients no longer believe that you can deliver consistent results.
Watching positions in Google is so "old school". ;)
Maybe what's needed to make it interesting is a stock-ticker type of display. You'd store a list of keywords in the program options, and a marquee across the top of your screen would show:
"...blue widgets 12...pink widgets 6...fuzzy green widgets 23...blue widgets 300..."
no..to make it interesting we need to get back to the old days when you hired a link monkey per keyword and the following month you watched your rise through the ranks...now that was fun!
