I've seen quite a few sites rank very well using subdomains. To me they don't seem to be justified other than to create more pages with keywords in the URL? Is this best practice or are these types of sites in the Google radar? Why not use a directory on your existing domain?

Because to many directories in the same domain makes updates more and more complicate.
So I started 2002 with thematic subdomains on my main domain.
The thematic subdomains have each between 150 and 800 pages.
