Google devaluated a single page

Yesterday Google devaluated a single page
result: from 100 visitors (occasionally 1000 visitors) to 5 visitors a day.

Only 2 changes were made
- the only external link on the bottom of the page was changed to a brand new page on the same site
- We created an small popup (onclick) page with additional info for an item on the page, this small page has the main keyword in its title and about 5 times onpage

Any thoughts on this behavior?
thanks

There's all sorts of possible reasons, not necessarily related to the changes you mention.

I'd suggest re-reading Google's Guidelines, and making sure you hav not made other changes, maybe a while ago, that Google would depracate.

Also check ALL your outgoing links; if any are part of a link exchange, remove them.

If any are reciprocal links, check each of them carefully - are they sites you would recommend to your visitors? If not, remove them.

Are any links not relevant to your readership? Is there a reason for them to be there?

A sudden drop without major chnages often results from link partners 'going bad' - and Google is getting much more fussy about quality links.
