The rewards come to sites with content relevant to the search term. Sites with incoming links from related sites will have an advantage.
Whether a term is technical or not is of no interest to a spider; the popularity of that term may matter. Keyword packing, however, is never a good idea, and can be fatal.
A better approach is to make a site that it is interesting and useful to your visitors; if you achiebve that, you will have also made a site that is search engine friendy, and one that will attract links from related sites
