Will linking from a foreign language site help or hurt me

My PR6 Japanese site linking to an English site

I have a very clean PR6 site, and several PR4s in Japan, and am thinking about linking them to my very unrelated English site. Well, its not totally unrelated as part of the English site is teaching what I've successfully done in Japan.

I see it as being similar to a design company having a link at the bottom of a clients page...

But is there any risk to linking from the Japanese sites to the new site?

If all the sites involved currently have healthy and natural backlink profiles, I'd say there's very little risk and possibly some small gain. Just don't go to any excess and I think you're fine.

That may not be as valuable these days as it once was, by the way. But it's certainly not all that dark a practice.

I think I'm really only worried about google not understanding what category to put me into (if they are actually doing this...) and not giving me a good ranking for the keywords I should be in.

Agree with tedster. If you don't overdo the number of links you will actually benefit.

I would take a link from an arab,chinese,hebrew,russian, swahili, urdu site....
